Thoughts and Spring cleaning

Spring flowers are reminding me that no matter what has happened in my life or the world, life keeps going.  They are there to grow, bloom and add beautiful colors to my surroundings. No matter the weather, flowers provide food to pollinating insects and hummingbirds.  Migrating yellow warblers have arrived, I love to watch them as they hope onto branches blending in with the dense foliage. My pride and joy are the rhododendrons, their flowers form a beautiful large round cluster like a bride’s bouquet.  I can take no credit for their healthy display, this native specie thrives in my garden. In the next couple of weeks they will be in full bloom allowing me to walk into my own impressionist painting. The old fruit trees are adding their blooms to this beautiful canvas, their delicate flowers abuzz with the sound of busy bees.

As I raked the grass I was startled by my first garden snake as it slithered away into the weeds.  I had been wondering when I would start seeing them around the field as the sun is warming the ground.  Note to self: you now know where one of them is, be prepared to meet it again when you get to that side of the house, will probably be bigger by then.  I am usually okay meeting one snake at a time, it is always the same primal respond, I jump, the snake scampers in the opposite direction. I see snakes as life barometers, as long as they thrive around me I know that my environment is thriving too.

I have not seen much of the hummingbirds lately, I do hear them buzzing around as they enjoy the nectar from all the spring flowers instead of drinking from the feeder.  The other birds have been entertaining me with their trapeze like jumps from branch to branch. Their antics amuse me as they hang upside down, dive, hop, walk or run. They seem to enjoy the food that nature provides for them, their chatters accompany me throughout the day.

Spring brings renewal, hope and longer days which allows for more time to think and dream.  Magazines are full of tips on how to clean our houses in a more efficient way. I on the other end would rather hire a crew to clean and garden for me so that I can enjoy the fruits of their labor while sipping my coffee, tea or wine depending on what time of day it is.  I am a great housekeeper and gardener in my dreams only. So until I hire some helpers, I weed, clean and plot. The last few days I have been working in the garden and enjoying the beautiful weather. As I pulled on tufts of crabgrass that have no business growing in my flower bed, and as I held and followed the string like root towards the next stalk, a happy realisation popped into my mind.  Like the unwanted weeds I am removing, I have been replacing my negative self talk by positive affirmations about myself. I feel so much better about myself, without realizing it, I have created a much healthier mental environment. The positive root system is spreading through my mind creating thoughts that allow me to see myself with clearer eyes and a more loving heart. I feel so much lighter, negative thoughts weigh a lot.  It worked!!!!

By changing what we say to ourselves we create a more fertile life for ourselves thus we are better able to spread hope, joy and happiness around us.  Happy weeding!
